iOS 7.1 Release Date, Jailbreak Status and Things to Know

iOS 7.1 is almost here and a number of people have already seen what it looks like. If you own a developer account with Apple, you might have installed the beta version but for regular users who are really curious to see what the latest major update to iOS holds, it’s only a matter of time before it’s unveiled for the public.

Which device gets this update?

Obviously, all devices currently running iOS 7 will get this update starting from iPhone 4 and iPad 2 upwards. It has been speculated that this might be the end of the road for this two devices and if we are to judge by the way Apple operates (they may be considered old already). iPhone 3G was dropped at iOS 4.2.1 and iPhone 3GS didn’t get past iOS 6.1.3.
There may be fixes later on but if there’s ever going to be iOS 8, these two devices won’t get it and that’s for sure.

When is iOS 7 going to be released

If earlier reports are correct, it should be available this week, the next or sometimes later this month. Reliable sources have already predicted that iOS 7.1 would be released by March and here we are already.
Although Apple may decide to change this, all indications point to next week as the release date.

Should I upgrade?

Well, yes, but not yet. It’s always advisable to chill when a new iOS version rolls out. Why? there are likely to be bugs and sometimes, those who upgrade wish they had stayed on the previous iOS version. Most of the time, it’s impossible to go back once you’ve crossed the bridge.
You don’t need to upgrade your device on the fist day iTunes prompts you to do so. Go online, read users feedback and then be sure all is well before going ahead.

Is there going to be a jailbreak for iOS 7.1?

If you’re a jailbreaker, it’s better to upgrade to iOS 7.0.6 now if your devices supports it since Evasi0n7 still jailbreaks it. For iOS 7.1, it may be a harder nut to crack and it’s possible there won’t be a jailbreak for a while… if ever there’s going to be one.
Apple has already patched the exploit Evasion7 uses on iOS 7.1. You may want to stay where you are and ignore the upgrade till a jailbreak is released.
